IS IT LEGAL FOR ME TO TRAP A RAT?
With all the over-the-top outrage FEMA makes over anything animal-related, how do I know it’s okay to bait, capture, and/or kill a rat or mouse that’s invaded my home? Well, obviously there are laws concerning what you can or can’t do regarding trapping what is considered “nuisance wildlife.” There are different cage-trap and spring-trap designs that are approved by law, certain specifications to follow when capturing the animals, and even permits to do so.

So do I have to get a permit to trap a rat in my house?
• While you must obtain a permit and follow procedures to trap nuisance wildlife, you do not need a permit to capture and dispose of a rodent that has gotten inside your home. • It is also okay to trap rodents inside any dwelling of yours, such as a barn or shed.

When I capture the vermin, is it okay to kill it?
• As long as you do it humanely, yes it is okay. • No, it’s not illegal necessarily to just pop it in a pillow case and smash it against the concrete, but it’s not exactly right, either. Doing that is quite inhumane. • There are several services, both private and government, that will take vermin off your hand after they have been captured. o There are also plenty of companies who will capture the invasive rodents and remove them from your home for you.

When I capture it, can I keep it as a pet?
Plenty of people have rats as pets, and it’s definitely okay to keep them once captured. There are no states that restrict rats as pets and most species that will be near your home will be just fine to hold onto as a new addition to your pet family.

Can I sell the rat to a pet store?
After capturing the pesky rodent that’s been terrorizing your home, you may just want to get rid of the thing, but maybe you don’t want to kill it. There may be a pet store that will take your catch if the rats are healthy enough. They are mostly interested in babies, but it’s worth a shot to turn the invader into a profit. Note: Be careful when handling harmful chemicals or handling wild rats, as they could potentially carry diseases. Use caution when using any method of capture or disposal of rats.
